The Trump administration’s federal hiring freeze is squeezing the team of meteorologists who help air traffic controllers inform pilots about the weather minute-by-minute as they steer airplanes in and out of the Bay Area’s three major airports.

People will die directly as a result of the policies of this administration; literally there will be increases in morbidity and mortality. And pyutti could not be happier. It will take decades to recover from the damage done just up to this date. I cannot fathom what 45 more months will do in terms of harm to the US and to the rest of the world directly from these policies. smh.

That’s precisely the goal. It’s a great way for Russia to kill Americans without firing a shot. It is one of many ways they’re doing this.

I just don’t understand what happened between the first term and the second. First term all the dude did was play golf.

This second term its like he’s under threat of assassination or something.

Or, it’s just the courts that ruled the President can’t go to jail for any actions they perform. So he’s basically a dog off a chain.

I’d argue he’s not even doing that much. He’s just signing his name where they tell him to. Trunk isn’t a singular supervillain. There’s a whole team of assholes doing this shit.

The administration is completely different. The GOP had a lot more influence on the admin choices in 2016. MAGA is the party now and they get to appoint anyone they want. 2016 still had people who believed in democracy, the 2024 administration sees it as a hinderance.

You’re vastly underestimating the damage done in his first term. Everything he did then set the foundation for what he is now.

If you look at what he actually did first term and compare it to this term, they’re pretty close in their evilness. The Muslim ban, the family separation, the hiring of really dumb people. Everyone is just forgetting or weren’t paying attention the first time.

There’s a lot more people with a plan behind the scenes this time. They only need him to sign the papers.

His NOAA budget cuts also reduced the number of weather balloons sent up every day. Meteorologists are all sounding alarms that this will result in unnecessary deaths.

The cuts also affected the launching of weather balloons, less are being launched now daily, so current knowledge of the jet stream across the US will be more limited. This means daily routing of flights through the various air “lanes” gets more challenging, more unexpected air, predicted fuel burn rates will be wrong if a tailwind isn’t blowing as fast as estimated, or headwinds are stronger.

Likely won’t increase crashes too much, but will increase turbulence, in-flight injuries, rerouting, and detour landings.

(As well as forecasts for the ground being less accurate.)

I mean, when was the last time the bay area even had any meteorites hit anywhere close to it? Sometimes I just don’t even understand why we need to be so concerned about meteors hitting aircraft, given the sublimely low probabilities involved. Seriously, this administration just needs to convert all the extraneous meteorologist jobs into weatherologist jobs and the waste and fraud will be fixed.

Seriously though, they’re probably confused by the whole “meteor” part of the word. Dumbening it into “weather” may actually help protect those important jobs.

Doubt it. Weather changing sounds an awful lot like climate change which is a “woke” DEI concept of the liberal left. /s

Starting to get a lot of my news on Lemmy, just realizing. The interface, using alexandrite.app is more readable than scrolling through the twitter style platforms or reddit. More soulful than feedly rss reader.
