Scalpers amassed appointments using bots and fake accounts to exploit an online system. The Tax Collector’s Office spotted 200 suspicious appointments in the first three weeks after opening a new downtown Miami location for driver’s license services, the Miami Herald reports. The agency has its sights set on individuals who are part of local driving schools as suspects in strangling the DMV’s system. Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez said in a release:

And this is any different than what Ticketmaster allows? If it’s legal for them it should be legal for the DMV.

Maybe if ticketmaster was doing it it would be cool. This is about individuals making profit, which is bad apparently.

Reminds me of a story. Not as annoying as the DMV but there was a BBQ place in Texas, an old place in some old dying town. The place is open only 3 or 4 days a week until the meats are gone. When open the line goes out the door and down the sidewalk. I went once and the local high school kids would get in line. As they got closer to the front they’d start selling off spots, auctioning their place in line. The kids got paid then went and got in line again. Repeat.

Selling DMV appointments could become illegal

    🤣 🤣 🤣
Oh boy Americans suck at infrastructure. Why the hell can you even make an appointment to a public service not registered to a specific person? And why the hell can you make more than 1 appointment? It’s so amateurish it begs to be abused.
It’s such a small effort to make it properly, and avoid this shit 100%.
But I guess USA doesn’t have the necessary talent to build systems that actually work as intended.

USA is such a shitty country with shitty politicians and shitty services.
And people vote these shitheads in over and over again. 😜

It’s not “America.” It’s Florida. Plenty of states have their shit together. Show us more about how you know nothing of the US except for what you read on Lemmy.

I remember when our local Florida county redid their DMV office and made it actually not suck. Once word got out, we got such an influx of people driving in from other larger counties that they had to ban them except on a specific day.

Lack of federal quality and safety standards is America, and the federal government is allowing all kinds of shit in Florida, Texas, Alabama and many other states.
Or are you really telling me problems with DMV is limited to Florida?

Reading comprehension and understanding the US government is clearly not something you excel at.

I said “Plenty of states have their shit together,” and you assumed that was 49/50.

Also, the whole point is allowing states to manage their own infrastructure. This certainly comes with a lot of bad management, but if you think having something on a federal level means it’s more efficient, honey you need to look harder at our federal programs.

I’m pretty happy with my state. That type of thing (the article) doesn’t happen here.

Also, you do list the trashiest states. Trashy things happen there. 🤷‍♂️ go to a blue state.

Perhaps you can tell me what country you’re from and I can look up some ways your infrastructure is crap?

No it’s not, that’s just republican rhetoric they violate the instant they have government power.

Denmark, and good luck with that. 🤣

Denmark is significantly smaller than the US, and it would make sense to have everything on a federal level. In fact Denmark is about the size of many US states. It’s smaller than West Virginia:

The republicans do have a lot of rhetoric and hypocrisy. But since things aren’t one system for everything, it prevents a single insane president from being able to fuck everything up at once. (Although it does seem that everyone is getting fucked these days)

For example, Abortion. If it was totally federal (which it was for a while) then Trump could have banned it outright. Now, it goes back to the states and the people who choose to live in shit states get shit for dinner.

As a person who is married to someone of the same sex, I’m pretty glad that my state had same sex marriage before it was recognized nationally. We will see how long it takes for that to be yanked away.

Believe me, I’m no fan of this country, but if you’re going to laugh and crack jokes at least know what you’re talking about.

Denmark is significantly smaller than the US

Did you just now realize that most countries of the world are smaller than USA?

Yes we are smaller, and that of course makes more even services easier. But it doesn’t make it cheaper. To develop the software for the IT infrastructure is about 60 times more expensive for us than it would be for USA, if USA leveraged the power of scale.

So it is also a HUGE disadvantage regarding cost of deployment per capita.

Here we have same sex marriage in the whole country, free healthcare, free education, one of the best democracies in the world and highest level of freedom of speech too, longer life expectancy, higher HDI, way less poverty despite USA is richer! Half the CO2 per capita, higher quality of life (happiness) index. And it just goes on and on.

When I say USA is a shitty country, it really is compared to Denmark, and many European countries. Even the best states of USA don’t compare to Denmark on the quality of society.
And that’s despite USA is a richer country!

                  Source?

You’re trying so hard to feel superior. Very American lol. It’s quite funny. I’m not disagreeing that many, many other countries are a better place to live than the US. I’m just saying you know absolutely nothing about the US, or how its government works. All you know about is the rhetoric you speak of, and what you hear in the news.

There is a reason that states maintain control over local issues.

Why the hell can you even make an appointment to a public service not registered to a specific person?

You need to go to the DMV to acquire legal ID, usually. Plus SSN isn’t exactly…secure so can be easily brute forced.

And why the hell can you make more than 1 appointment?

You do know multiple people can live in a household, right? And/or multiple people can use the same computer? Like at libraries?

I agree that the US desperately needs infrastructure upgrades (including with the education system that’s actively being torn apart), but to blame the basic services we do have for being abused by shitty people, when it’s largely the fault of intentional underfunding and gerrymandering isn’t productive.

Maybe you’re a troll, and you’re likely not USian so it’s not something you need to care about, but I hope anyway you can find a moment to deep breathe and have a good rest of your day. /gen

You need to go to the DMV to acquire legal ID

You can still make it to a specific person. It would be weird to have an appointment as John Doe, but ask for services for another name. And that should of course be dismissed.

Plus SSN isn’t exactly…secure so can be easily brute forced.

There is no mention of this being a hack. And it doesn’t change the basics for making an appointment, unless someone hacks the system real time to make a reservation in your name. Also hacking has extreme penalties in USA, so we would be talking severe crime contrary to it not even being illegal as it is.

You do know multiple people can live in a household, right?

And how does that change anything?

And/or multiple people can use the same computer? Like at libraries?

And how does that change anything?
It should still only be possible to make reservations for 1 specific person, it has never been an issue where I live.

I think if you want to arrange a family meeting, you are thinking of social services, not the DMV.

Imagine being so stupid and desprate for drugs you misunderstand an article you didn’t read just to have an excuse to shit out a malicious comment and get that squirt of dopamine.

      What a pathetic life.
