I might have misunderstood what you were asking. Thought by r something you meant how to link communities (subreddits)
Cool. So just put and exclamation point?
On Reddit you could put r/wouldyourather and I would link to that community. But because of federation, that does not work on lemmy. It is written as an email address, but you need to put an ! at the begging so it knows it is not an email address. Thus [email protected]
so it knows it is not an email address
well, not quite.
It’s so your own instance will properly link to it in a way that will cause you being able to interact with it from your own instance.
So for you the link will be https://populi.xyz/c/[email protected]
But for me it would be https://discuss.tchncs.de/c/[email protected]
well, not quite.
But without the ! it thinks it is an email address correct?
Cool thank you
A little more complicated than that, if you want to go to a community hosted on your instance (in your case lemmy.ml), you would go to
https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy
. This is different from the Ask lemmy hosted at lemmy.world.To navigate to this community hosted on lemmy.world from your instance, you would instead use
https://lemmy.ml/c/[email protected]
<your_instance>/c/<community>@<instance_hosting_community>Using an “!” [email protected] lets you create a clickable link for other people to a specific community.
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]
Pls don’t confuse the new guy 😭
I’ve been here for almost a year and I still don’t understand links here. It’s ok, we can get by.
Yes exactly :) Most clients should support it like that. When in doubt, just use the exclamation point
Additional info:
Some apps will also autocomplete while typing it in, which makes it easier for people on other platforms (ex. Mastodon) to be able to use the link.
For example, here are two versions of the link (with the formatting
in this format
so you know what to type)Plain typed link: [email protected]
!communityPromo@lemmy.ca
Auto completed link: [email protected]
[[email protected]](https://lemmy.ca/c/communitypromo)
So if you have the option to use auto complete, it might be a bit better. Often I just do the first one
c/ for community
But linking to communities needs the exclamation point and the server instance too
Cool I am learning so much from you guys and gals more than I learned on reddit from over a decade…no sarcasm.
Welcome, friend
Instead of u/username its @username@instancedomain which translates to
https://instancedomain/u/username
Instead of r/subname its !communityname@instancedomain which translates to
https://instancedomain/c/communityname
Basically, in the body of a post or comment, use the ! or @ format to create a workable link.
Da real MVP
I think we still call them “upvotes” and “downvotes”.
Updoots and downdahs
A yaydoo or a mehdoo
Nahyeahs or yeahnahs … but that might be just aussiezone
you can’t tell me what not to upvote!
Word.
I’ve got similar questions, this one covers a lot of bases.
Upvote for you both.

Lemmy has communities so it’s /c/starterkmemes
And of course that didn’t hyperlink.
