I have unfortunately missed Furiosa in theaters and i’m desperate to go see it. I think my most recent views were Idea of You (at home) and Call Me By Your Name (in a theater). I did not mean to watch two movies about age-gap relationships in a row, but I guess it just worked out that way.

• Idea of You was actually much better than you might think from the trailers. The movie hit a lot of themes around the horrors of being world-famous, and really explored the dynamics of an age-gap relationship in a context where the younger person actually has more power than the older person in a lot of ways. The movie features a not-One Direction boy band, and the songs they wrote for the movie keep popping up in my head, weeks later.

• Call Me By Your Name is an indie darling that many know and love. It’s my partner’s favorite movie. I liked it, but it didn’t click for me in the way it does for others. There is a lot of beauty in the film, but I remained conflicted about the age-gap all the way to the end. On the one hand, both characters are relatively young, and both are inexperienced in how to be gay, so they are both on equal footing in that way. On the other hand, it’s a movie about how a 17 year old and a 24 year old develop feelings for each other and the older man lets it happen, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this story would be so much more fucked up if it wasn’t fictional. The movie does everything it can (with tricks of cinema) to make you root for Elio and Oliver, and to make you understand that their connection is unique and special and beautiful. But this is a work of fiction, and I guess I just have a hard time finding beauty in a grown man lusting after a child that looks like a child.

Dune: Part Two is a masterpiece.

I’m struggling to find anything interesting at all.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Fight Club. Rewatched it a couple days ago because my gf didn’t know anything about it except the meme of “First Rule of Fight Club…” and I had last seen it possibly 20 years ago.

Just got freaked out by a new film called ‘Latency’. I’ll watch it tomorrow when I’m not getting ready for bed.

I’m a fan of atmospheric horror too, so I’ll give Longlegs a watch.

Recently, I’ve also seen:

• Late Night With the Devil - really good retro horror flick. They got the feel of the late 70s just right, and i enjoyed the way the tension gradually builds to a crescendo.

• A Quiet Place: Day One - was a big fan of the first movie, but the sequels have been increasingly disappointing. This one was definitely the weakest, IMO, but still somewhat enjoyable if you still feel like seeing a little more of the same.

• Furiosa - it was never going to be quite as good as Fury Road, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It leant a little too much towards the grotesque at times, but the central performances and the world building were still good.

• Immaculate - Sweeney is pretty good and it has some atmosphere but by the end it got a little too silly for me. A fairly passable religious genre horror, all round.

• Dune: Part Two - as a big fan of the books, I have to say it was a little disappointing. Villeneuve nailed the look and feel of Arrakis no doubt, but this part felt rushed and unsatisfying - It really needed another 30 or 40 minutes to allow some of the central plot points to land and to give the characters more room to develop. I enjoyed it, but it’s not the masterpiece it could have been.

Gladiator 2, and whenever the next Dune part releases.

I’ve been watching old movies on Turner Classic. I particularly like the introductions they sometimes get (mostly movies in the 8pm time slot). Obviously you can’t go see them in the theater, but they come around fairly often and some can be found on Max, Prime, or the like. Examples: Journey into Fear (Orson Wells), Berlin Express, Desert Hearts, The Long Voyage Home (John Ford), and New York New York (Scorsese).

I watched the Masque of the Red Death, it’s available for free online. I quite enjoyed it and it’s that kinda movie that sticks with you. It’s based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe.

The new Beverly Hills Cop: AxelF It’s ok, better than I thought it would be but it’s nothing to write home about. It basically copies it’s old format though.

Godzilla x Kong: Terrible. Couldn’t even finish it and I can be a sucker for this kind of stuff.

The Babadook, it made me tear a tear as no other movie in years.

I remember the memes back when it premiered and thought of it as a silly monster movie BUT OH NO. Either psychotic or supernatural, however I interprest the film is horrifyingly captivating.

Haven’t heard of any new movies that excite me.
