Another Darknet Diaries fan here. Very approachable, centered around cyber security and privacy. It’s the only one I am currently listening to, but I am going to check out some of the others from this thread.

Unless I misunderstood what you said, that’s not it either. 50% chance of rain means exactly that: according to their forecast models, there is a 50% change it will rain. Snopes did a writeup of this.

It really depends on how much you can tolerate. I don’t know if full time is 40 hours in Germany like it is in the US.

If you have an option to try it for some time and fall back to plan B, why not do that? Then you can tell if the money is worth the extra work time.

Very good point, and I did not intend to make an argument about generations being different. Generations indeed consist wholly of individuals with their own opinions. On an individual level, age is no better an indicator of personality than your zodiac sign.

In my comment I just wanted to express that, after a long period of dread, I am feeling more hopeful after seeing so many members of the young generation getting engaged and making a difference where I personally feel we failed.

It was also meant to express appreciation and gratitude to those who are getting involved and as encouragement to those who are yet to do so.

As a Gen Xer I’m heartened to see Gen Z stepping up to literally save the world. Seeing the swell in support for Harris and in voter registration numbers, I for once am feeling hopeful. I hope they can accomplish what the forgotten generation couldn’t.

That said, surely you have seen recommendations from Microsoft to try their Office package and such oil up. It’s like that, but more intrusive.

For one, the United States lacks a good press corps of independent journalists with broad reach.

Everything is either politicized or commercialized. Shock value sells. Balanced rational discourse does not. Polarization makes too much money for too many people.

On top of that, a systematic destruction of education and a stranglehold of religion practically makes ignorance inevitable.

Yes, unless it is encrypted, in which case you need a way to decode that. You can even boot an OS from a USB thumb drive to recover files from a hard drive.

Is moving the drive to another computer as a secondary drive an option? Or put it in a separate USB enclosure? That way you don’t need to boot it at all, unless it’s encrypted or something.

What about volunteering? Usually no credentials or experience is required. You get out of the house, get to be around people, and you get the satisfaction of feeling like you are doing something useful, which is rewarding in itself.

It could be anything. You have all kinds of organizations wanting volunteer help: social outreach programs, churches, scouts, clubs, etc. See if anything local catches your interest.

Make sure your switch(es) are actually getting the full speed. Despite good cables, they could be negotiating at lower speeds. Also check that your router isn’t limiting bandwidth in its configuration somewhere.

I switched to self hosted Piwigo after Flickr started threatening to delete my photos a while back.

It had an extension that let me import all my photos from Flickr. Not sure if that still works after they changed hands.

It’s very easy to maintain; just click the update button in the Web UI. And it comes with a bunch of extensions.

It isn’t terribly different in practice from state and local regulations in the US, except the rules in Norway are the same nationwide.

For example, where I live in Ohio, I can buy beer at the grocery store with some restrictions on Sundays. I can also buy harder liquor in the state store, which is located in a physically separated section of the grocery store and where you have to be 21 (legal drinking age) to shop. Alcohol is subject to special taxes here, as well.

In Norway I would buy beer at the grocery store then go across the street to Vinmonopolet and buy some wine. I could do that at age 18, though some harder liquor is/was restricted to 21.

So it’s not all that different, except in the US the limits are a little different, it’s more likely to be regulated at a local level, and typically run by some private for-profit entity.
