Research has found liberals to be more empathetic than conservatives, so in a troubled world one might expect them to be sadder. But a profound shift appears to be under way when it comes to excitement about change. “One of the fundamental traits of the conservative attitude is a fear of change, a timid distrust of the new as such,” wrote Friedrich Hayek in “The Constitution of Liberty” in 1960, “while the liberal position is based on courage and confidence, on a preparedness to let change run its course.”
of course we’re not excited about change… shit’s getting worse
If something’s going to try to grab my attention, it had better be worth my while. I block as many notifications as I can, both on my phone and my computer. I also try to avoid using apps for things unless I have to.
As nice as it would be to see people ditch Threads for the Fediverse, I suspect the number of people who will actually do that would be infinitesimally small. The power of inertia is very, very strong.
It’s less disinterest and more hostility. The Lemmy devs straight up don’t want us here. Even if they fix the moderation issues, I don’t think it’s a great idea to stay on the platform in the long term.
I’ll never use a Meta/Facebook product if I can help it. They’re pure evil.
Pretty crappy, really, I’ve been laid low with what is most likely a flu since Tuesday. I’m still sick, but I think I’m getting better now. At least it doesn’t seem to be covid(I took two tests and both came back negative).
This isn’t surprising in the least. They’ve been pushing more and more ads recently; trying to get streamers to run them more often. I hate ads, so I have always opted for a short pre-roll so that when its done, viewers won’t have to worry about ads anymore. But I think Twitch will eventually force streamers to run ads every half hour, no matter how many people they scare off.
Sometimes you just need to throw some hands to prevent worse violence down the line. It isn’t a perfect world and we’re a bunch of upjumped apes. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to be better than that, but we should at least be realistic about the hand we’ve been dealt. That being said, perhaps you’re right about going the restorative justice route. I just worry because, this is getting normalized way past what anyone should feel comfortable about. Like, I feel we should do everything we can to prevent people from becoming Nazis. If naming and shaming deters people from going down that rabbit hole, I think we at least have to consider it.
In 99% of cases, you would be correct. However, these are Neo-Nazis we’re talking about here. Like, if they got their way, I’d be dead, so so would a lot of other innocent people. Their ideology has caused unspeakable horrors, and it’ll happen again if we let our guard down. There has to be a social cost to being a Nazi. Like, this shit is getting way too close to the right wing mainstream. This isn’t a matter of just “people we don’t like”. They’re dangerous. Name them. Shame them. Ruin their lives. Force their evil ideology back into the deep, dark fringes where it belongs.
It’s alright, just basically Twitter 2. It’s useful for some things. A lot of creatives chose to migrate there, which is nice so that I can network with fellow Twitch streamers and keep up with news on the platform. As much as I like Mastodon, I just wasn’t getting that there. It’s also nice that a bunch of artists I used to follow are there.
Beehaw’s admins have been trying to address some of those issues.
Criticism of the actions of Israel’s government does not make one an antisemite.
Yeah, I think I’ll pass. The Raspberry Pi people hired a former police officer who used their stuff in hidden surveillance. Then when people called them out on it on Twitter, Pi blocked those who did. https://petapixel.com/2022/12/09/raspberry-pi-under-fire-by-creators-who-are-upset-it-hired-a-former-cop/
I’ve been using it for years, first out of disdain for Internet Explorer, now out of disdain for Google Chrome. I just do not trust the corpos at all, and Firefox has always been solid(outside of a few years in the '10s).
Honestly, that article is pretty lousy. It just boils down to “I oppose gay marriage because I don’t like the concept of marriage”. Just seems like veiled homophobia to specifically call out opposition to gay marriage when they could have just written “I oppose the concept of marriage, and this is why”.
The parents of a woman who was beaten to death at a county jail last year are suing the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, alleging failures by several of its leaders and deputies allowed her to be killed by her cellmate.
Chief among the failures, the lawsuit says: Deputies gave Kaushal Niroula, who was transgender, a sex offender cellmate with a violent past.
The new filing adds to the cascade of similar suits over inmate deaths that have been recently against the department, which is also being investigated by the state attorney general over the deaths and other allegations of misconduct and civil rights violations.
A record 18 inmates died in the jails in 2022.
The suit states that the department acted negligently and in violation of both the constitution and state law by allowing Niroula to be housed in a cell with Ronald Sanchez, a man who was a convicted sex offender and had a history of violent behavior. The sheriff’s department manages all jails in Riverside County.
The suit states that sheriff’s personnel knew Sanchez posed an imminent threat to Niroula, who was particularly vulnerable because she was transgender and HIV-positive, and yet the sheriff’s department allowed the two to be housed together at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
The cops murdered her.
Even I could have told you that a vague digital “proof of ownership” of a hideous, mass-produced ape image was a bad investment.
If they’re informative and/or helpful, I don’t mind bots. If they’re those stupid pointless novelty bots that were plaguing Reddit, they can go away.
Sorry! I didn’t realize it was paywalled because I could see the whole thing. Hopefully this should work:
Eugene V. Debs ran for president in 1920 while he was serving time for “sedition”(he had been making anti-war and anti-draft speeches during World War I). It’s certainly possible, though incredibly doubtful he’d win. I find that I can’t really count anything out when it comes to Trump, though.
