Its the absolute lack of algorithm. No, really. I know Mastodon toots it as a feature, but without an algorithm to keep people scrolling most people just close the app and do something else. People who don’t understand instances would just go to mastodon.social anyway, but since no mastodon instance is actively trying to keep its users engaged 24/7, people naturally realize they have better things to do than to use social media all say.
Which is better for humanity, but bad for retention.

The only active AI feature is the automatic alt text one, and that’s entirely local. The second one is a sidebar that will just open AI chat websites, which you could already do by just, ya know, looking up the webpages the regular way. No data is getting sent anywhere so far.
I take it they finally moved on from 1990 in the government?
Or melancholic
This has been available for most of the year. What took any tech news org so long to even awknowledge its existence?
“Our users, who don’t have as much free time as they did during the pandemic, didn’t binge watch a 13 episode show, one hour per episode, the very day it came out like they did during lockdown? Cancel the show its a flop”
The only issue for Firefox’s translator currently is the time it takes to load at first, or the fact you have to download each model first. Its not some monumental task, but it does have more friction than Google’s “automatically send the site you are browsing to our server”
This is actually one of the few cases where it makes sense. Its for alt-text for people who browse with TTS
Fucking Aquaman
Yeah, that’s odd. I could swear Google had something in its terms that specified you couldn’t mix its results with other search engines.
Lemmy still tends to show posts from ages ago in hot, so some slip by
And also the maintainers being too trusting. They openly discussed pirate ROMs in the server and such.

It would be pretty useless as it is. Even for them. Federation only really mattered for a few people (us), most of their userbase doesn’t care or know so its not like it was meant to be a hook to lead them in.
Its not like they weren’t warned or anything. The mods told the community that they got approached for an interview in a pinned post. Declaring they won’t be doing it unless they had someone really really good at speaking.
In comes one of the oldest mods, who genuinely is completely anti all forms of work, from when the sub was actually against the very concept of working, claiming to have media training (they had been interviewed before, through email). And they launch themselves to the occasion and the rest is history.
Saying it works is very generous.
