Students of Irkutsk University developed a unique drone that allows extinguishing fires using artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the Russian National Technological Initiative program reported Saturday.

The students successfully tested an AI-equipped hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle to douse fires, Sputnik news agency reported.

The drone flies along a predetermined route and, thanks to AI, can distinguish between a campfire made by tourists or sun-heated metals or even a fire focus. After collecting information, the device will send data to a remote monitoring center.

Wouldn’t it be more efficient to use water to extinguish fires? I don’t know if AI is a good flame retardant but it seems like an expensive thing to use.

I just remembered an old joke:

Q: what doesn’t fit in your ass and doesn’t buzz?
    A: a Soviet-made ass-buzzer.

I wonder how good at flying and fighting fires that thing really is.

I like how they’re accidentally going full drone only because they sent all their people to die and drones are cheaper + all that’s left.
