The findings in a nut shell:

“Heterosexual men who play extreme metal guitar do not seem to be doing it to attract women, as has been suspected about musicians of other genres,” DeLecce told PsyPost. “Instead, it seems they are trying to impress and/or intimidate other heterosexual men with their skills.”

Also researchers mention their study suffers from small sample size.

As someone who spent many years in a metal band, I can assure you, it was fun, but it did not get me laid. But the first time I subbed in for a mediocre Counting Crows cover band, women actually talked to me after the show.

    I no longer play metal.

Of course it is! Lol. Although I doubt they care what gender is listening and just want to show how awesome they can shred. Extreme blistering proficiency in any instrument is dedication few of us can fathom and they aren’t doing it for a handy if they where they would have probably given up practicing years ago.
